When I began my photographic journey in street photography in late 2007, I found there was something profoundly striking about the combination of a woman and a bicycle. But why? What makes it so appealing? What makes the equation work? This project strives to become a compendium of imagery featuring models with a bicycle.

In the fall of 2017, I had moved to Columbia, South Carolina. Not long after moving, I purchased a bicycle to get around the area where I lived. I bought this particular bike less for it’s functionality than it’s form. Just a gorgeous, gorgeous bicycle. And surprisingly devoid of any branding on it (except for the basket which was purchased separately.)

There’s something about women and bicycles that’s so utterly appealing. I’ve never been able to put my finger on it. In speaking with others, I’m clearly not alone in my thinking.

When I first started shooting street photography in South Beach, it was almost invariably a golden shot whenever a woman with a bicycle would appear in front of my camera. Maybe it’s the mixture of the beauty of femininity with the simple beauty of the machinery. I don’t know. I welcome your thoughts on the matter. I would love to get to the bottom of it. Until then, I’m just going to keep shooting this series. And likely after the mystery is solved. 🙂

I’m shooting very specific video footage with each model in these shoots. Once I have shot enough models for this project, I’ll be pulling all of that together.
